Circa 1965, R/C model sailboats became readily available and established the popularity of R/C model sailing. Like sailing the full-scale craft, one boat by itself is relaxing, get two or more boats together for a race, then the fun is multiplied. Now that R/C model sailing was popular it was only inevitable that a group of enthusiastic R/C sailors would get their heads together and start up an organization to set down rules and promote regattas. This is the American Model Yachting Association today. The AMYA was founded in 1970 through the efforts of the famous "nine", who were scattered across the country and Canada and represented a different class of yacht along with their Association duties. In addition to its broader goals, the AMYA has been granted authority as the National Governing Body for the model sport of sailing by US Sailing. Members of the AMYA who are citizens of the United States may compete for the US in international competition. Membership in the AMYA is not limited to US citizens. There are many members around the world who join to receive the Model Yachting Magazine and the freedom to vote in AMYA recognized Yacht Classes. The AMYA is devoted to promoting the designing, building, racing, and preservation of all model sailing yachts. We pursue these goals by recognizing certain Classes of Model Yachts, sanctioning model yacht Regattas, recognizing model Yacht Clubs, publishing a periodical newsletter Model Yachting Magazine, and Promoting Model Yachting in general.
